Energy saving permanent magnet motor improves efficiency

Gear drive specialist Bauer Gear Motor has announced a new development in energy-efficient permanent magnet synchronous motors, which could have a number of applications on dam sites, for example to power compressors, pumps and fan drives. The PMSM series is an environmentally friendly range of motors, claimed to be based on a highly efficient design of rotor which integrates embedded permanent magnets made from rare-earth material, instead of the squirrel-cage rotor found in induction motors. This design offers a number of key benefits. It reduces heat losses from the rotor by 100 per cent and total losses by approximately 25 per cent, and increases total efficiency by 10 per cent or more. For the PMSM user, this improved performance represents lower total cost of ownership, a reduction in CO_2 emissions, and ongoing savings which help to mitigate future increases in energy costs.
