Hidroelektrarne Na Spodnji Savi (HESS), a subsidiary of Slovenia's state-run power producer Holding Slovenske Elektrarne, has started the construction of the 45 MW Brezice hydropower plant on the Sava river. A ceremony attended by Prime Minister Alenka Bratusek was held on 25 March. The €118 million run-of-river project is expected to be completed in the second half of 2017. It is projected to produce an average annual output of 161 GWh, representing about 1 per cent of domestic power production. It will be equipped with three Kaplan turbines and generators to be supplied by local power engineering firm Litostroj Power and Koncar KET of Croatia, under a contract awarded in December 2013 and valued at €36.5 million (US$ 50.2 million).
