Nearly 50 years ago, the French built a tidal plant at La Ranee that has been operating more or less continually since then, generating enough electricity to supply the annual needs of a small town. It is a continuous supply of electricity, the cost of which is falling every year. Now half a century later, the UK has the same opportunity with the Tidal Lagoon Project (TLP) in Swansea, Wales (see H&D Issue One, 2017) following a powerful recommendation by an official report, 'The role of tidal lagoons: The Hendry Review, January 2017, Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy', urged the Government to go ahead with the scheme.
