AfDB to finance Malagarasi in Tanzania

The African Development Bank (AfDB) signed loan agreements totalling US$ 140 million in late May with the Government of Tanzania for the construction of the 50 MW Malagarasi hydropower plant in the western region of Kigoma. The AfDB has agreed a US$ 120 million sovereign loan, with the remaining US$ 20 million being provided by the AfDB-admin-istered Africa Growing Together Fund, which is supported by China. The financing has a 24-year tenor, including a five-year grace period. The Government is providing US$ 4.14 million in equity. The loan agreements, which were signed on 28 May by Emmanuel M. Tutuba, Permanent Secretary at the Tanzania Ministry of Finance and Planning, and Nnenna Nwabufo, Director General of the Bank Group's East Africa Regional Development and Business Delivery Office, will finance the construction of the plant and transmission line, as well as 4250 rural electricity connections. Of the funding, US$ 119.6 million will support construction of the gravity dam and powerhouse, US$ 10 million will be for the transmission line and rural electrification; US$ 10.3 million for project management, and, US$ 4.14 million has been allocated for compensation and resettlement.
