Australian pumped-storage sites selected for further investigation

Hydro Tasmania has selected three sites for further investigation as pumped-storage hydropower facilities, as part of the Australian island state's Battery of the Nation initiative. Lake Cethana, Lake Rowallan and Tribute were shortlisted as the most promising sites from an original list of 14 potential options around Tasmania that were identified in a study last year, the state utility announced on 13 March. Projects at Lake Cethana and Lake Rowallan, in the northwest Mersey Forth region, involving connecting existing reservoirs to new off-stream reservoirs would offer, respectively, 12 hours and 24 hours of storage capacity, while the Tribute project on the west coast, would provide 31 hours of storage through the conver-sion of the 84 MW Tribute station and construction of a new connection between Lake Plimsoll and Lake Murchison, according to Hydro Tasmania. "The three selected sites represent strong and sustainable development options with the sort of long-term storage options the future national electricity market will need," the utility said.
