A Consideration of Three Types of Burglars: Based on the Thinking of Herbert Packer, Rawls, Norval Morris, and Samuel Donnelly

In this paper three models of a burglar are depicted. The first model is a person who steals for survival. For example, a person may take money for food or food itself to sustain their body if they have no other means of providing for their hunger. For purposes of this paper, this model is labelled 'the desperate criminal'. The second model is a burglar who steals sometimes for survival and sometimes for the thrill of the crime, just because he is bored. This model is labelled 'the criminal who lacks direction in his life'. The third model shows a person who steals simply to take from others what he is not inclined to earn for himself. This model is labelled the 'conventional burglar'. To examine how authoritative thinkers view punishing these three types of criminals, we consider the thoughts of Packer, Rawls, Morris, and Donnelly. Lastly, we provide considered moral judgment as it has been influenced through the study of above thinkers.
