In 1924, in reaction to a decidedly anti-Asian United States federal immigration mandate, first-generation Japanese American Issei leaders adopted a concept that they called kakehashi, a ‘bridge of understanding’. Kakehashi called for parents to support efforts for international exchanges from which their Nisei children could visit Japan to better appreciate their culture and heritage and share it with the white mainstream.
