In the present paper, a dislocation nucleation criterion for contact problems involving a sharp edge indenter is proposed by using an analytical model. The model used in this study is more accurate because the coupling effect between the normal and tangential deformations is considered. The results show that the coupling effect on the normalized external load is obvious especially at the leading edge and the effect of the Poisson’s ratio is very small except on the normalized external load at the leading edge. The criterion proposed in this study may be used to predict the dislocation nucleation angle and the critical loading near the sharp indenters in contact problems.
