Riveted lap joints in aircraft fuselages have always been an important topic for designing the structures of various transport aircraft. The number of lap joints in an aircraft is large, and the number of variables to be adopted is also large. The damage tolerance concept requires special attention for the fatigue properties including the fatigue life until fatigue initiation, crack propagation in view of inspections, and the remaining fail-safe strength. The number of variables of a riveted lap joints is large. Well known variables are sheet thickness, sheet overlap, rivet pattern, type of rivet and riveting procedures. Reducing the sheet thickness can imply a most substantial weight reduction, but it can introduce fatigue problems. Increasing the overlap increases the fatigue life which is also depending on various other details of the riveted joint. Many fatigue tests were carried out in the past in laboratories of the aircraft industry and in aeronautical research institutes. In many cases such test programs addressed ad hoc questions. As an example, a new type of an advanced fastener becomes available. The question then is: what are the implications for the fatigue properties and production.
