For an effective evaluation of Horizontal Roughing Filtration (HRF) performance in Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removal from water with powdered activated carbon injection, a pilot study was arranged using a complex pilot system including raw water production installations, injection units, rapid mixing and a three-compartment HRF unit with a changed bottom structure for continuous deposit removal capacity, effective filter cleaning and head loss control. The results showed that in the simple HRF, by injecting around 60 to 70 mg/l activated carbon powder, the process of TOC removal in the ordinary entering concentrations of natural water (less than 10 mg TOC per liter) amounts to 75 per cent; while by adding one coagulation unit with a limited injection of coagulants at the entrance of filter (Direct Horizontal flow Roughing Filtration (DHRF)), the removal efficiency increases up to 90 per cent.
