Captive animals have attracted the attention of human beings for a long time. The domestication of wild animals in captivity by early human societies must have had definite objectives. The most obvious, even today, are as resources of food and food products like meat, milk and eggs. Other uses of captive animals for work, protection, companionship, sport and recreation would have been added as human societies diversified and became 'civilized'.
