CONTRIBUTION OF COMMON PROPERTY RESOURCES TO RURAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: A CASE STUDY OF UTTAR PRADESH

The process of rural development in many progressive economies is highly linked to the availability of common and natural resources. Besides incomparable and non-enumerable contribution to ecology, climate and environment, particularly, the conmon property resources (CPRs) can generate ample scope of income and employment for the rural poor, and spillover benefits to agriculture, cottage industries and livestock. In this piece of research, an attempt is made to empirically investigate how is the growth of private properties such as agriculture, cottage industries and livestock linked to CPRs; and again, how the livelihood of rural people is influenced by variation of CPRs' availability and growth. This study is mainly based on primary data collected by adopting the method of stratified random sampling. The census of households was conducted in each sample village. A comparative study is done between CPRs-rich and CPRs-poor villages. From findings of the study, it is inferred that a strong CPRs base can significantly contribute to the sustainable development of the rural economy.
