Efficiency of AB Process for Slaughterhouse Wastewater Treatment in Hamadan (Iran)

The operation and efficiency of the AB process for treating the slaughterhouse wastewater in Hamadan (Iran) was studied over 10 months from May 2001 to March 2002. The system consists of a 2-stage activated sludge process in series with a flow of 500 m~3/day. Results showed that the average reduction for different parameters was: 73.3% TS, 78.9% VS, 67.05% TSS, 63.9% VSS, 74.75% BOD_5, 70% COD, 87.28% TC and 82.52% FC. The treated effluent still contained TS 1241.6 mg L~(-1), VS 758.2 mg L~(-1), TSS 486.6 mg L~(-1), VSS 378 mg L~(-1), BOD_5 831.55 mg L~(-1), COD 2674 mg L~(-1), TC 1.82 x l0~6 MPN (100 mL)~(-1) and FC 1.0 x 10~6 MPN (100 mL)~(-1). The results indicated that the effluent quality did not comply with the Iranian Environmental Protection Agency standards for reuse in agricultural activities. If the treated effluent is to be safely reused for irrigation, (a) blood should be separated from the wastewater stream; (b) anaerobic pond should be used for primary treatment, (c) wastewater should be oxygenated in an aeration tank, and (d) the accumulated sludge and scum should be removed and properly treated.
