Les guerres napoléoniennes ont eu pour corollaire la résurgence des activités hydrographiques à travers le monde. En Méditerranée, les travaux britanniques ont été conduits par William Henry Smyth avec la remarquable contribution de Francis Beaufort. Smyth a également effectué des levés conjoints avec les hydrographes napolitains et autrichiens, dans l'Adriatique, et a coopéré avec le capitaine de vaisseau français Pierre-Henri Guattier, un des premiers exemples de coopération internationale dans le domaine de l'hydrographie.%In the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars there was a resurgence of hydrographic activity around the world. In the Mediterranean the British effort was spearheaded by William Henry Smyth with Francis Beaufort also making a considerable contribution. Smyth also carried out joint surveys with Neapolitan and Austrian surveyors in the Adriatic and co-operated with the French Captain Pierre-Henri Guattier, in an early example of international co-operation in the field of hydrography.
