Total was preparing to begin work on plugging a gas leak at its G4 well on its Elgin field in the UK North Sea as IGR went to press having received approval to reboard the Elgin platform on April 5. It said it was confident that the initial cause of the blowout from the field was an isolated incident, although it escaped a serious disaster, when a flare that was left to burn residual gas on an evacuated platform burnt itself out. The flare was pointing upwind of the gas cloud.
