A growing majority of US companies expect to use their cash stockpiles to make an acquisition this year, mainly to expand their geographic footprint, according to a KPMG annual M&A outlook survey. Nearly three-quarters of the 145 chief executive officers and chief financial officers polled said they were planning an acquisition this year, whereas just half said they pursued a merger or takeover last year.
