The European Central Bank bought €1.8bn in AB5 in the week to January 29, official figures showed on Monday. This compared with €382m the previous week. The purchases bring the central bank's holdings to €17.59bn. This compares with €150.54bn in covered bonds and €544.17bn in public sector debt. The ECB has long been criticised for its sluggish pick-up in the ABS space, compared with other bond programmes. The latest figures, however, signalled that the central bank could be ramping up its buying in the asset class.
