Record quarter for Nomura wholesale

NOMURA moved back into the black during the April-June quarter following a record performance in its wholesale division and its international business. The Japanese investment bank, which recorded its first quarterly loss in over a year in the three months to the end of March, said net profit for the first quarter of its 2019-20 fiscal year (April-March) was ¥142.5bn (US$1.36bn), up from ¥55.8bn a year ago. The rise was driven by a surge in trading activity and a one-time real-estate-related gain of ¥71.1bn. Revenues from fixed income jumped 88% to ¥154.9bn, just a tad shy of the 95% increase in revenues among the big five US banks, following a blowout quarter across multiple product lines including credit, securitised products and rates.
