NanoHorizons Business Has Silver Lining

Bolstered by both the acquisition of new customers and $2.2 million in equity capital, four-year-old startup NanoHorizons Inc. is banking on the promise of silver-based nanotechnology in providing enhanced antimicrobial properties for several textile applications. A 20-employee company spun off from the research-focused Center for Nanotechnology and Utilization at Penn State University (State College, Pennsylvania), NanoHorizons, with offices on the outskirts of the university, has developed nanoscale-engineered additives that contain silver-based nanoparticles. The company claims its technology enables nanoparticles to permanently integrate antimicrobial properties into fabrics that cannot be removed by repeated washings.
