摘要

The Canadian government announced Oct. 17 its intention to draft regulations to prohibit the importation, sale, and advertising of baby bottles containing bisphenol A, with the bans taking effect in 2009. A scientific assessment of the substance concluded that while bisphenol A poses no danger to the general public, uncertainty about its potential impact on new-borns and infants up to 18 months of age justifies the introduction of additional control measures, Environment Canada and Health Canada said. Health Minister Tony Clement said the proposed regulations to ban the use of the chemical in baby bottles, as well as the release of a final scientific assessment of bisphenol A, and a proposed risk management plan, follow on the federal government's 2007 challenge to industry to provide details of their management of the substance.
