Spain Publishes Revised Land Law Covering Rights, Obligations of Owners

In a move designed to help enforce sustainable land development requirements, the Spanish government June 27 put into force its revised Land Act regulating the rights and obligations of land owners. Legislative Royal Decree 2/2008, which the Council of Ministers (Cabinet) first approved June 20, was published June 26 in the Boletin Oficial del Estado, Spain's national register, for entry into force June 27. "Instead of a neoliberal law, the Land Law is a protective and demanding law ... [I]nstead of a law that promotes excessive construction development, [it is] a law that encourages sustainable growth of construction activity," stated First Vice President Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega.
