While China is expected to have the second largest construction market in the world after the United States this year, only 1 percent of its newly built environment aims to be certified "green" floor space, according to experts at a China Greentech Initiative-sponsored conference in Shanghai Sept. 7-8.rnChina's buildings generally use less energy than those in most developed countries, but they are much less energy-efficient and contribute about 17 percent of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, according to a summary, released at the conference, of CGTI's forthcoming The China Greentech Report 2009.
