Italy Gives Regions More Environmental Discretion

The Italian Ministry of Environment started a process of reorganization June 4 that will hand increased power for environmental policymaking to regional governments. The plan will merge the ministry's six director-general posts into four positions and create a fifth director-general position to oversee the environmental policies of the regional governments. The change will increase responsibilities for regional governments to report to the ministry and reduce the number of times the ministry must report to Parliament from three times a year to two. When the process is complete, more than 100 powers for the administration of local environmental policy will be transferred to thernregions as part of the government's broader effort to decentralize policymaking on domestic issues.
