Australian Provincial Body Lists Sustainable Development Goals, Seeks Legal Framework

An advisory body to Australia's Northern Territory government Feb. 17 issued a discussion paper calling for sustain-ability principles to be more comprehensively incorporated into legislation and decision-making. The paper issued by the territory's Environment Protection Authority puts forward six sustainability principles and proposes that companies be required to demonstrate that any major new projects are in keeping with the principles. "The EPA believes it is no longer acceptable to pay lip service to sustainable development or to reference the terminology in government policy or legislation without defining what it means or putting in place frameworks to ensure it can be robustly incorporated into whole-of-government decision-making," the paper said.
