Ontario Releases First Progress Report On Results Of Climate Change Action Plan

Ontario Environment Minister John Gerretsen Dec. 10 released the province's first annual progress report on implementation of its Climate Change Action Plan. The report shows that overall emissions of greenhouse gases have been reduced 6 percent from 2004 levels, confirming that the province is on track to meet the goal of reducing its emissions 6 percent from 1990 levels by 2014, 15 percent by 2020, and 80 percent by 2050, Gerretsen said. "We are proud of our progress, but we still have a long way to go," he said. The report also showed that the province has reduced carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired electricity generation by 20 percent; contracted for more than 2,600 megawatts of new, renewable power; completed more than 78,000 home energy efficiency audits and 20,000 retrofits; and set aside more than 225,000 square kilometers (86,870 square miles) of the province's Far North Boreal Region, which is considered a globally significant carbon sink.
