Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da, Silva Sept. 15 issued a decree creating a 15-month, 340 million real ($198 million) inter-ministerial program to protect the Cerrado, a wooded grassland in Brazil's central plains.rnThe Cerrado program retains the main components of an earlier Environment Ministry program: increasing sustainable activities (R$224 million, or $130.5 million), monitoring for deforestation and controlling forest fires (R$102 million, or $59.4 million), and increasing protected areas and promoting better land-use practices (R$13 million, or $7.6 million), Juliana Simoes of the Environment Ministry's anti-deforestation policy department told BNA Sept. 16.
