China to Launch National Water Resources Survey

China's State Council will work with several ministries to conduct a nationwide census on water resources to be completed in 2012, according to a notice posted on the council website Jan. 14. Planning for the census and pilot projects will begin in 2010, fieldwork will be carried out in 2011, and the results will be published in July 2012, the State Council said. The census will "identify the basic situation of China's rivers and lakes," including total number, distribution, and natural and hydrological characteristics, the notice stated. It also will look at how water conservation projects arernbeing carried out; detail wastewater releases and soil loss; and examine economic and social uses of water, such as the number of people living in water basins, total area of arable land, total irrigated area, and urban and rural residential use.
