More than a third of the food consumed in the European Union contains measurable pesticide traces, though maximum residue levels (MRLs) are exceeded in only 2.6 percent of cases, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said in a report published Nov. 8. According to The 2009 European Union Report on Pesticide Residues in Food, pesticide contamination was found in 37.4 percent of more than 67,000 samples, covering 300 foodstuffs, taken in 2009 from the 27 EU countries, plus nonmembers Iceland and Norway.
