India Announces Energy Efficiency Labeling Standards for Laptop, Notebook Computers

India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has announced an energy efficiency label for laptops and notebook computers, called the BEE Star Label version 1. Unlike BEE's star labels for refrigerators, air-conditioners, and other electronics that indicate the product's energy efficiency, the BEE Star Label version 1 will be affixed only to energy-efficient products. Whether a product is energy-efficient or not will be computed using formulas set out in guidelines for laptops and notebooks. Only a product meeting all criteria in all modes— active; no-load; and power factor, which shows the ratio of the power used to the power absorbed or returned—will qualify as an "Energy Star" and be eligible to bear the BEE Star Label.
