摘要

In the weeks since a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami sparked a nuclear emergency in Japan, governments around the world have begun to review their nuclear energy policies and in some cases have halted plans to expand use of the low-carbon power source. The March 11 earthquake and tsunami damaged four of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant's six reactors. According to the Nuclear Energy Institute, fresh water is being injected into the reactors in an effort to cool the nuclear fuel and U.S. Navy ships also are supplying fresh water to cool the reactors and nuclear fuel storage pools.
