Chinese Advocacy Organizations Pressure Paper Company to Compensate for Violations

A group of 24 nongovernmental organizations across China has targeted the country's largest papermaking company with a petition campaign calling for it to publicly apologize and pay compensation to residents for 21 environmental violations recorded by environmental protection bureaus since 2004, BNA confirmed Jan. 25 by viewing the petition and record of violations. The violations by Shandong Chenming Paper Holdings Ltd. recorded by bureaus across China include failing to fulfill environmental impact assessment requirements, illegally discharging sewage, failing cleaner production audits, emitting excessive dust, and improperly treating wastewater or exceeding mandated chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels, a measure of water quality.
