Voluntary Lead-Acid Battery Recycling Standards on Hold After Vote by Stakeholders

An international standard-setting organization will not develop voluntary consensus standards for the recycling of spent lead-acid batteries following a stakeholder vote at a Dec. 3 meeting. Industry representatives and other meeting attendees voted 63-16 against ASTM International organizing a group to develop standards for spent lead-acid batteries, also known as SLABs. That decisive vote ends the process for ASTM, absent a change in the industry that would prompt it to engage in the standards development process, said Pat A. Picariello, ASTM's director of development operations.
