China Sets Stricter Discharge Standards For Paper, Printing, Chemical Industries

Heavily polluting industries in China such as papermaking, printing and dyeing, and chemical production face tougher requirements to lower chemical oxygen demand in wastewa-ter, under a document issued by the State Council, the country's top decisionmaking body.The document, released Oct. 19, also calls on government departments at all levels to "strengthen implementation" of China's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) for Environmental Protection, outlines which ministries and departments are responsible for certain pollution reduction goals, and urges the phasing out of outdated facilities to curb emissions, among other things.
