U.S. Senate Passes Bill to Shield Airlines From European Union Emissions Program

The Senate has passed by unanimous consent a bill to bar the European Union from including U.S. airlines in a carbon dioxide emissions trading system.The European Union Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act of 2011 (S. 1956) would prohibit U.S. airline companies from participating in the EU greenhouse gas emissions trading program for aircraft. The bill, which the Senate passed Sept. 22, would authorize the Transportation Department and Federal Aviation Administration to negotiate a global approach to address aircraft emissions instead.
