European Commission to Revise Limits For Some Hazardous Substances in Toys

The European Commission said March 22 it will revise EU limits on the presence of four hazardous substances in toys after Germany was given an exemption allowing it to retain its stricter national limits. Carlo Corazza, Commission spokesman for industry policy, told BNA that stricter EU-wide safe levels for barium and lead will be adopted by the end of 2012 and that limits for nitrosamines and nitrosatable substances will be revised by the middle of 2013. The limits are contained in the 2009 Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC) and were not due to come into force until July 2013.
