Legislators should apply the "precautionary principle" when considering measures to regulate nanomaterials and other new technologies that might harm the environment, the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU) said in a report presented to the lower house of Parliament (Bundestag) in mid-January. Nanomaterials, a collective term for particles that have been engineered on the smallest possible scale, are used in a variety of consumer goods and are particularly significant for the electronics and chemical industries.
