Canada's governments and farmers must take steps to protect and ration water supplies through summer droughts and prepare for more frequent flooding if the agricultural sector is to continue to grow, according to a report released July 3 by the Adaptation to Climate Change Team at Simon Fraser University. "Climate change is compounding the impacts of relentless population growth and development pressures on land and water resources, which are in turn are disrupting the capacity of our natural systems to sustain intrinsic biodiversity values known as ecosystem services that bestow a host of benefits including buffering against the impacts of extreme weather," said a briefing note for the report.
