Swedish Chemicals Agency Proposes EU-Wide Restrictions on Chemicals in Textiles

Sweden is proposing to ban certain chemicals from textiles throughout the European Union, a move the bloc's largest textile trade association says would likely put EU companies at a competitive disadvantage. Published April 15, the proposal is contained in a new English-language report, Hazardous Chemicals in Textiles, from KEMI, Sweden's national chemicals agency.The report commissioned by the Swedish government calls for a new "coherent piece of EU legislation on hazardous chemicals in textiles," that would establish a list of specific chemicals to be outlawed or restricted. Amending the EU's Fiber Labeling Regulation (1007/2011) would be the most effective way of realizing this goal, the report concludes.
