Uruguay's wind energy generation installed capacity will more than double by the end of next year, with investment in the sector expected to reach $2.8 billion thanks to a national plan launched in 2008, President Jose Mujica said Sept 30. The wind-power plan has helped the energy-strapped country, which has no oil of its own, to cut power rates by 5 percent and is expected to further enable it to reduce rates by up to 20 percent by 2016, Mujica said at a recent energy forum. Uruguay's wind energy generation installed capacity is now projected to reach 490 megawatts by the end of this year, 1,200 MW in 2015 and 1,300 MW in 2016, Mujica said. That would help make the nation of 3.3 million a world leader in installed wind capacity as a percentage of overall energy, according to Energy Director Ramon Mendez.
