Germany's first supermarket to sell groceries without any packaging has opened in Berlin, as the country takes steps to deal with a rise in plastic garbage and packaging waste. The venture, called Original Unverpackt, sells loose organic groceries, including produce, grains and beauty products, from bins and liquid dispensers that customers can use to fill reusable containers. Founders of the Berlin start-up say their business venture was about two things: saving money and helping the environment. "The lack of packaging waste not only helps us save money, but the savings are passed on to our customers," Sara Wolf, co-founder of the store, told Bloomberg BNA. "We try to get as many products as we can from local companies to cut down on the carbon footprint."
