EU Panel Calls for Input on Chromium Ⅵ In Toys, Suggesting Tougher Limits

A European Commission scientific committee has called for comments to be submitted through Sept. 28 on whether allowable limits for chromium Ⅵ in toys sold in the European Union should be reduced because of new evidence about the potential carcinogenic effects of the substance. According to a preliminary opinion issued Aug. 1 by the commission's Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER), the amount of chromium Ⅵ allowed in toys should be reduced because recent research cast doubt on what was previously considered a "virtual safe dose" of the substance.
