EU Imposes Limit on Bisphenol A In Toys for Children Up to Age Three

The European Commission said June 25 that it has adopted a directive that makes a voluntary European Union standard on the presence of bisphenol A in toys a mandatory requirement. The directive, which amends the 2009 EU Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC), requires a "migration limit," or limit on the amount of the substance, a suspected endocrine disruptor, that can be transferred from a toy, of 0.1 milligrams per liter (mg/l). The limit applies to toys for children up to the age of 3 and to all toys intended to be placed in the mouth. The limit is taken from European standard EN 71-9:2005+Al:2007 on organic compounds in toys, published by the British Standards Institution.
