摘要

Energy ministers from the Group of Seven countries said bolstering renewable energy production would be a central part of their recommendations at the G-7 summit in Brussels in June. According to a statement released May 9, representatives of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K. and the United States, along with the European Union Commissioner for Energy, discussed alternatives to Russian natural gas at a meeting days earlier in Rome. The actions Russia has taken regarding Ukraine put energy security on the agenda for the meetings, with increasing renewable energy production cast as one of the ways countries can become less dependent on foreign energy sources. The environmental and health aspects of increasing renewable energy use were not discussed, according to a G-7 spokesman. "We intend to promote the use of low carbon technologies (renewable energies, nuclear in the countries which opt to use it, and carbon capture and storage) including those which work as a base load energy source," the group said in a statement after meeting in Rome
