28 Pharmaceutical Substances Do Not Meet Toxicity Criteria, Canadian Government Says

Environment Canada and Health Canada have published environmental assessments concluding that 28 pharmaceutical substances, including common drugs such as warfarin, oxazepam, chloramphenicol, and phenobarbital, are not toxic. The 28 substances do not meet any of the toxicity criteria in Section 64 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act and therefore do not require any regulatory action, the departments said in five notices published in the March 22 issue of the Canada Gazette, Part Ⅰ. The draft screening assessments, the lowest level of environmental assessment, are open to public comment through May 21. In one notice, the departments said that Tamoxifen, 2-[4-[(lZ)-1,2-diphenyl-1-butenyl]phenoxy]-N,N-dimethyl-ethanamine, is primarily used in pharmaceutical products, had been identified for priority assessment because it had met categorization criteria for bio-accumulation and inherent toxicity to nonhuman organisms, but available evidence showed low risk to organisms or the broader environment.
