European Commission Launches Legal Action Against U.K. Over Nitrogen Dioxide Pollution

The European Commission has launched legal proceedings against the British government for its persistent failure to meet the European Union's pollution limits for nitrogen dioxide. The U.K. repeatedly has failed to submit air quality improvement plans showing how it intends to achieve cuts in nitrogen dioxide by the required deadline of Jan 1., 2015, the EU's executive arm said in a Feb. 20 statement. The EC said that it has sent the British government a "Letter for Formal Notice" specifying that the U.K. has breached nitrogen dioxide limit values in 16 of 43 geographical zones-the highest proportion within the regional bloc.
