EU Funds Research to Help Protect Coastal Communities From Extreme Events

The European Union has begun two research projects to help coastal communities reduce risks and increase resilience during weather-related extreme events. One project, called Preparing for Extreme And Rare events in coastaL regions (PEARL), seeks to help policy makers and emergency services develop more integrated risk management strategies for coastal floods and other events. "Coastal floods are regarded as one of the most dangerous and harmful of all natural disasters," the PEARL project said on its website. "Rapid urbanization in coastal areas combined with climate change and poor governance" can lead to a significant increase in the risk of coastal flooding, which poses "a greater risk of devastation in coastal communities."
