Germany Adopts Bills to Phase Out Coal, Digitize Energy Transition, Modernize Markets

The German Cabinet adopted measures Nov. 4 that would pay energy companies to set aside their coal-fired power capacity, digitize the energy transition to green power and introduce an "energy market 2.0" to deal with the increasing amount of intermittent renewables in the mix, ensure the security of supply in the long term, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The measures-two bills and a regulation-now go to the German Parliament, where passage is expected, perhaps by the end of the year.
