摘要

British Columbia's Environmental Appeals Board canceled a water-use license for hydraulic fracturing in its gas-rich northeastern Peace region after a challenge from an area aboriginal group. The license, issued in 2012, had allowed Nexen Inc., a subsidiary of China National Offshore Oil Corp., to divert water from North Tsea Lake for storage in dugouts and industrial use in oil field injection in shale gas fracturing. In Decision No. 2012-WAT-013 issued Sept. 3, a board panel canceled the license based on what it deemed serious technical flaws and issues in the consultation process. It also said some of the company's water consumption could have hurt species in and around the lake.
