Local Officials Join Pope Francis in Call For Global Pact to Fight Climate Change

Around 70 environmentally minded mayors and regional political officials from around the world signed a pledge July 21 calling for a global agreement to confront climate change, including a non-equivocal statement that human-induced climate change is a "scientific reality" whose control is "a moral imperative for humanity." The declaration also said governments should promote policies to shift away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy sources. Attendees at the start of a two-day workshop at the Vatican included California Gov. Jerry Brown and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who called on those gathered to "take every local action to maximize the chance that our national governments will act boldly." Other U.S. officials at the summit included the mayors of San Francisco, Boston and Minneapolis. International leaders attending included the mayors of Oslo, Vancouver, Madrid, Milan, and Kochi, India.
