European Parliament Ratifies ETS Market Reserve to Deal With Surplus Carbon Permits

Members of the European Parliament July 8 gave their final approval to a fix to the European Union's emissions trading system (ETS) that is intended to increase the carbon price by removing excess carbon allowances from the market. Sitting in Strasbourg, France, European Parliament lawmakers voted 495-158, with 49 abstentions, for a resolution drawn up by Belgian center-right lawmaker Ivo Belet that ratifies the fix, which EU member states informally agreed to in May (38 INER, see related story, 5/20/15).
